A cubic fourfold is a four-dimensional shape cut out by one cubic equation. Two well-known predictions link its rationality to K3 surfaces, through Hodge theory and through derived categories. This paper claims many cubic fourfolds have both K3 links and still are not rational. That would disprove Kuznetsov’s rationality conjecture and one direction of the associated-K3 prediction. The size threshold for the discriminant is not computed.

## At a glance

- **First step:** 2010 (A. Kuznetsov, who stated the categorical rationality conjecture)
- **Significance:** Major. If correct, it disproves Kuznetsov’s conjecture and the sufficiency of the associated-K3 prediction for cubic fourfolds.
- **Trust:** Claimed, not checked
- **Field:** Algebraic and complex geometry (1 paper)

## The explanation

A cubic fourfold is the set of solutions of one degree-three equation in six variables, viewed in projective space. An example is x₀³ + x₁³ + x₂³ + x₃³ + x₄³ + x₅³ = 0. A general cubic equation in six variables has 56 coefficients. Changes of coordinates use 36 numbers. So cubic fourfolds form a family with 20 free parameters. Each one is a four-dimensional complex shape.

The big question is rationality. A cubic fourfold is rational when it can be matched with ordinary four-dimensional projective space. The match is allowed to fail on smaller pieces. Algebraically, its field of rational functions is then a pure field in four variables[1]. Some cubic fourfolds are known to be rational. Beauville and Donagi proved this for sufficiently general Pfaffian cubics, a special kind[2]. Their proof linked the cubic to a K3 surface, a special type of complex surface.

Two predictions grew from such links. Hassett described special families of cubics, called Hassett divisors, labelled by a whole number d called the discriminant[3]. For admissible values of d, each such cubic has an associated K3 surface in a precise Hodge-theoretic sense. Admissible means d > 6 and d leaves remainder 0 or 2 on division by 6. A few divisibility rules must also hold. The admissible values below 100 are 14, 26, 38, 42, 62, 74, 78, 86 and 98. Kuznetsov gave a second prediction using the Kuznetsov component, a piece of the cubic’s derived category[4]. A derived category is an algebraic record of all sheaves on a space. His conjecture says the cubic is rational exactly when that piece matches the derived category of a K3 surface[4].

Earlier work showed these two links agree on most of each admissible family[5]. Later work showed every cubic with an associated K3 has the K3 derived category[6]. Russo and Staglianò proved that whole divisors are rational for d = 26, 38 and 42[7]. So the predictions fit every known rational cubic.

This paper claims that both predictions fail. There is a threshold d₀ with the following property[8]. For every admissible d above it, a very general cubic in that family is not rational. Yet its Kuznetsov component matches the derived category of a K3 surface[8]. The same cubics also have an associated K3 surface in the Hodge-theoretic sense[9]. Very general means outside a countable union of smaller subfamilies[10]. The threshold d₀ is ineffective: the paper does not compute it[10].

A second consequence uses the variety of lines on the cubic. Take d = 2n² + 2n + 2. Then the lines on a very general cubic form a shape matched to a K3 Hilbert square[11]. The Hilbert square parametrizes pairs of points on the surface. The first values are 14, 26, 42, 62 and 86, for n = 2 to 6. The paper claims this match also fails to force rationality once d is above the threshold[11].

How can one prove a shape is not rational? Suppose a matching map from projective space existed. The paper attaches one number to such a map. It counts certain K3 surfaces gained or lost along the way[12]. The same number is computed in two ways. Breaking the map into blowups along smooth centres gives the value 1. Breaking it into Sarkisov links, a different standard set of elementary steps, gives 0[13]. Both cannot hold, so no such map exists. The hard part is recognising the same K3 piece when it is later removed[14].

The paper also notes what this does not detect. These cubics pass the integral decomposition-of-the-diagonal test, a standard obstruction to rationality[15]. So that test cannot see their irrationality. The paper makes no claim about stable rationality, a weaker property[16]. Work by Katzarkov, Kontsevich, Pantev and Yu proved a very general cubic irrational in the full family. Their hypothesis does not cover a prescribed Hassett divisor[17].

How sure is this? No Lean formalization is listed for this paper in the openai/math release. So no computer proof checker has checked it. No specialist review has been published.

**What it doesn't show.** This does not compute the threshold, decide any specific discriminant, or settle stable rationality of these cubics.

## Where it came from

This result comes from an unreleased OpenAI model, published in the openai/math release on 6 October 2026.

## Hype check

Major only if the proof holds. No Lean formalization is listed and no specialist review is published. The threshold is ineffective, so no specific irrational discriminant is named.
