A hyperkähler manifold is a compact complex space with a special nondegenerate two-form. The SYZ conjecture says certain boundary classes on it always come from a fibration by tori. The first paper claims to prove this in every dimension. The second claims that the base of such a fibration is always projective space. No computer has checked either proof.

## At a glance

- **First step:** 2001 (Hassett and Tschinkel, an explicit nef-isotropic formulation)
- **Significance:** Major. If the proofs hold, they settle two central conjectures about hyperkähler manifolds in every dimension.

## The explanation

Take the quartic surface in projective three-space, the zero set of one equation of degree 4. Many such surfaces contain a straight line. Slice the surface with every plane through that line. Each slice is the line plus a leftover curve of degree 3. Call the class of that leftover curve E. Its self-intersection is E·E = 4 − 2 + (−2) = 0. Here 4 is the degree of a plane slice. The middle term counts twice the one point where the line meets a plane. The line itself has self-intersection −2. A class with self-intersection 0 is called isotropic. The planes through the line form a projective line, so the leftover curves sweep the surface as a family over it. Each curve is a torus.

A quartic surface of this kind is a K3 surface. K3 surfaces are the two-dimensional case of hyperkähler manifolds. A hyperkähler manifold here is a compact complex space where every loop can shrink to a point. It has one holomorphic two-form, nondegenerate everywhere[1]. Its complex dimension is even, 2n. On its second cohomology there is a quadratic form, the Beauville–Bogomolov–Fujiki form, which plays the role of E·E. For the surface, n = 1.

The example turns a class into a map. A line bundle attaches a line to each point. Its sections are like functions with prescribed poles. Nef means the bundle meets every curve nonnegatively. Semiample means some power of the bundle has enough sections to define a map, with no common zero[2]. For E above, the sections give the map to the projective line, and the tori are its fibers.

The strong hyperkähler SYZ conjecture asks for this in every dimension. Every line bundle with a nonzero nef isotropic class should be semiample[3]. The map would go to a base of dimension n, with fibers of dimension n. The name points to Strominger, Yau and Zaslow's 1996 picture of mirror symmetry through torus fibers. The difficulty is that the numbers alone give no sections, and no control over where sections vanish together[4]. Hassett and Tschinkel, and Sawon, gave early explicit versions around 2001 to 2003[5]. Matsushita showed that any such fibration has half-dimensional fibers of a special kind, called Lagrangian[6]. Soldatenkov and Verbitsky proved that semiampleness spreads through deformations. With earlier constructions, this settled all known types of hyperkähler manifolds[7]. But it is not known whether other types exist.

The first paper here claims to prove the conjecture in full[8]. It imposes no limit on dimension, deformation type or the second Betti number[9]. After the deformation theorem, one semiample deformation of the given class is enough[10]. The paper claims to build one. It builds a special torus near a degenerating family, then rotates the complex structure[11]. A rotation is a change to one of the other complex structures that every hyperkähler metric carries. After rotation, a known theorem of Greb, Lehn and Rollenske turns the torus into a fibration.

The second paper asks what the base of such a map looks like. Hwang showed in 2008 that a smooth base must be projective space, of dimension n[12]. So the open question was a singular base[13]. This paper claims that the normal projective base of any projective Lagrangian fibration is projective space, in every dimension and type[14]. Its proof first shows that the base is smooth, then applies Hwang's theorem[15]. It uses the first paper as an input. A further consequence is claimed: in each dimension there are only finitely many deformation types with second Betti number at least 5[16]. That step also uses a recent boundedness theorem of Engel, Filipazzi, Greer, Mauri and Svaldi.

How sure is this? No Lean formalization is listed for either paper. Both proofs combine metric analysis, period theory and many earlier theorems. No specialist review has been published.

**What it doesn't show.** This does not show that the fibers are smooth, or describe the singular fibers.

## Where it came from

This result comes from an unreleased OpenAI model, published in the openai/math release on 6 October 2026.

## Hype check

No Lean check is listed. Earlier work already covered all known types, and no specialist review is published.
