The rational Hodge conjecture for CM abelian varieties
The rational Hodge conjecture is claimed for every abelian variety with complex multiplication, in every dimension.
Update OpenAI withdrew 3 papers from this result on October 6, 2026 after finding a gap in a proof. What changed
The Hodge conjecture predicts which shapes inside a space can be built from polynomial equations, judged only by their cohomology. It is one of the best-known open problems in geometry. The main paper claims to prove its rational form for every abelian variety with complex multiplication, a highly symmetric kind. Through theorems of Milne, it also claims the Tate conjecture for abelian varieties over finite fields. OpenAI withdrew three related papers on 7 October 2026, and they are not part of this claim.
The explanation
Take the curve y² = x³ − x. It has an extra symmetry: send (x, y) to (−x, iy), where i² = −1. Check it at x = 2: the right side becomes (−2)³ + 2 = −6, and (iy)² = −y² = −6 too. Extra symmetries like this are called complex multiplication, or CM. Multiply four copies of this curve together. The result is an abelian variety of dimension 4 (a shape whose points can be added), and it is of CM typeSource 1.
Cohomology is a way to count the holes of a shape, sorted by dimension. For this fourfold, the middle layer used here has dimension C(8, 4) = 70. Each class there has a type (p, q). The classes of type (2, 2) form a 36-dimensional part, since C(4, 2) × C(4, 2) = 36. A Hodge class is a rational class of type (p, p). An algebraic cycle is a shape cut out by polynomial equations. Its class is always a Hodge class.
The rational Hodge conjecture asks for the converse. Every rational Hodge class should be a rational combination of classes of algebraic cyclesSource 2. For classes of codimension one this is the Lefschetz (1,1) theoremSource 3. Hodge asked for an extension to higher dimensionsSource 3. Products of codimension-one classes give some Hodge classes, but not all of them on an abelian varietySource 4. Weil classes are a key hard case. They need not come from such products, already on some abelian fourfoldsSource 5. Markman recently proved algebraicity of Weil classes on certain sixfolds and deduced the conjecture for all abelian fourfoldsSource 6.
For CM varieties, earlier work by Deligne and André reduced Hodge classes to Weil-type classes on auxiliary CM varietiesSource 7. That reduction named the classes to build but did not build them in all dimensionsSource 8. The paper claims to build them. It claims the rational Hodge conjecture for every complex CM abelian variety, in every codimensionSource 9. In the example, all rational classes in the 36-dimensional (2, 2) part would come from algebraic cycles.
The obstacle was constructing actual cycles. The paper reduces everything to four-factor tensors that balance, like v₁ + v₂ = v₃ + v₄Source 10. It realizes each one through a surface mapped into a product of CM varietiesSource 11. The surface comes from a quotient of the complex two-ball, a curved space, where theta forms supply a nonzero periodSource 12.
The paper also claims consequences through earlier theorems of Milne. They include the Tate conjecture for all abelian varieties over finite fieldsSource 13. They also include the Hodge standard conjecture for abelian varieties in every characteristicSource 13. Companion papers in the family claim the conjecture on some K3 surfaces and their powersSource 14. Another treats abelian varieties with an imaginary quadratic action, using the main theoremSource 15.
The family has a history of gaps. On 7 October 2026, OpenAI withdrew three related papers after a sign error in one proof. One had claimed the rational Hodge conjecture for products of K3 surfaces. The withdrawal concerns the proofs and does not say the statements are false. The release notes also list this Hodge result as an exception to the procedure used for most results, without saying how.
How sure is this? No Lean formalization is listed for these papers in the openai/math release. So no computer proof checker has checked them. Related papers in this family were withdrawn after an error was found. No specialist review has been published.
What it doesn't show. This does not prove the Hodge conjecture for all abelian varieties or for all smooth projective varieties.
Where it came from
This result comes from an unreleased OpenAI model, published in the openai/math release on 6 October 2026.
Hype check
Landmark only if the proof holds, and caution is warranted: three related papers were withdrawn on 7 October 2026 after a sign error. No Lean formalization is listed and no specialist review is published. It covers CM abelian varieties, not all varieties.
